A driver has escaped injury after his van burst into flames on a busy dual carriageway.

A section of the A40 in Carmarthenshire was closed after the fire broke out in the vehicle at around 9.30am on Tuesday morning.

The incident happened as the van was travelling west between Bancyfelin and St Clears.

Fire crews from Carmarthen and Whitland attended the scene and police officers closed both lanes of the dual carriageway as firefighters battled to extinguish the blaze.

A dramatic picture taken from the side of the A40 shows the scale of the fire, with flames engulfing the van and smoke billowing into the air.

The fire service has confirmed that the transporter vehicle was completely destroyed.

The van was completely destroyed

One lane of the A40 westbound was reopened once the van was moved to a lay-by after the fire was safely put out by crews using breathing apparatus and hose reel jets, but one lane remained closed for more than two and a half hours, reopening shortly after 12pm.

A paramedic also attended the scene but there were no casualties as a result of the fire.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called to an incident on the A40 St Clears at approximately 9.40am on Tuesday January,21.

“We sent an Advanced Paramedic Practitioner in a Rapid Response Vehicle to the scene. We were not required to treat anybody.”
