Chocolate lovers are outraged after opening their Thorntons advent calendars to find one of their favourites missing – and a “remastered” version in its place.

Day one of the Thorntons Continental advent calendar for 2020 featured a Viennese chocolate – but the new “Viennese Deluxe” in place of the old Viennese Truffle.

Thorntons describes it as “Our new take on Viennese Truffle, a delicate and creamy cocoa filling, encased in delicious milk chocolate and finely decorated with dark chocolate”.

But it didn’t impress some lovers of the original, who branded it “nasty” and a “massive let down”.

Unhappy Donna Giles said on Twitter: “Wait!!! What is this and what have you done with the Viennese Truffles!!!!”

Nicki Rann wrote: “1st December. Advent Calendar. Thorntons Continental, naturally. What fresh hell do I see? NO Viennese Truffle?$&*! They’ve given us a new take on the truffle, the best chocolate. Please @thorntonschocs tell me you haven’t discontinued them? I can’t live in a world without them.”

Another woman said: “Why oh why did you change the Viennese truffle? Just had my advent calendar, and the “improved” version is a massive let down.”

Meanwhile a disappointed chocolate lover said it was “Not a good start to December”, adding: “I’m so upset, what the hell has happened to the Viennese chocolate? It was my fave and it’s been ruined.”

Thorntons says the classic chocolate has not been discontinued.

However the Viennese Truffle – described as a “feather-light mousse coated with blended milk and white chocolate, topped with sugar” is now only available to buy in individual bags.

The company told customers: “The Viennese Truffles have been remastered in our Continental Collections creating the Viennese Deluxe but the originals are still available to purchase individually in bags. Sorry for any disappointment caused.”
