Spain will not be open for tourists until the end of the summer, according to the country’s prime minister.

According to reports Pedro Sanchez told a tourism meeting in Madrid this week that Spain will not be open for tourism until the end of this year’s summer season.

Mr Sanchez was speaking at the 113th meeting of the Executive Council of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) on Wednesday.

According to Euro Weekly News, Mr Sanchez said Spain would progressively prepare to reopen to tourists after 70 per cent of the native population had been vaccinated.

He said he did not expect that to have happened until the end of the summer season, reports The Mirror.

Spain is also trying to get the EU to approve plans for a Covid passport – a certificate proving vaccination.

Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez told RNE radio yesterday: “Vaccine certification is something we are going towards inevitably.

“It will be a very important element to guarantee a safe return to mobility.”
