Bars and businesses in Spain’s tourist hotspots have welcomed the return of British holidaymakers after travel restrictions were relaxed.

Flights linking UK airports to Spain resumed last week with more airlines set to begin flying again in the coming days.

Hotels that would normally close during October in some resorts are being urged to remain open through to Christmas to try to make the most of tourists’ desire to visit the country.

In Majorca, which has been particularly hard-hit by the lockdown, struggling businesses are gearing up for more UK tourists arriving.

Ryanair has already started flights to the island with tour operator Jet2 and TUI resuming holidays to the Balearic Island later this month.

More hotels plan to reopen this weekend after staying shut for many months with a host of bars and restaurants planning to welcome customers back from July 17.

Bar owner Paul O’Neill, who runs Sammys Pub in Magaluf, said it was time to save what is left of the summer. He opened his business again at the start of the month after being forced to shut at the start of Spain’s state of emergency in March.

“Let’s make the best of what remains of the summer. We had a great night when we opened up again.

“We are operating under Covid-19 restrictions but it is fantastic to be open again,” he said.

A spokesman for EastEnders bar in Magaluf added: “Loads of hotels are opening this weekend. All of the premises that are open already are very busy in the evenings and it’s actually a really nice atmosphere everywhere.”

Meanwhile, resorts on the mainland have already reported an influx of UK holidaymakers.

Benidorm on the Costa Blanca is already busy with beachgoers having to book a spot on the sand, while beaches on the Costa del Sol were forced to restrict numbers for the third weekend in succession because of social distancing measures.

It is expected to get even busier when quarantine restrictions for British visitors to Spain are banished from July 10.
