Priti Patel has called out UK-based influencers for “showing off” their trips abroad while England is in a national lockdown.
The Home Secretary blasted photos shared by some on social media showing them enjoying holiday hotspots around the world.
Speaking in the House of Commons, she also said there have been reports of people showing up at St Pancras station in London with their skis.
It came as she announced tough new border rules, including a “managed isolation process” in hotels for those who cannot be refused entry to the UK.
It will include those arriving home from countries where the UK has already imposed international travel bans.
She told MPs: “Travel is down from 90% compared to this time last year. Clearly there are travel bans in place for countries that are red listed and that’ll continue and the announcement today will also reduce the number of travelling passengers, I do want to emphasis that, because people should simply not be travelling.
“We see the examples… I will call some of them out. Border Force have given me examples where even at St Pancras people have been turning up with their skis, that is clearly not acceptable.
“We see plenty of influencers on social media showing off about which parts of the world that they are in, mainly in sunny parts of the world.
“Going on holiday is not an exemption and it’s important that people stay at home.”
Some influencers who are abroad have said they are there for business reasons, and have insisted their trips are not a holiday.
