Prime Minister Boris Johnson will host a Downing Street press conference later today (Wednesday), Number 10 said.

The briefing, expected to take place around 5pm, comes as the Government is expected to announce tough new quarantine measures.

Mr Johnson, answering questions in the House of Commons, told MPs that Home Secretary Priti Patel would set out tougher quarantine measures later on Wednesday afternoon for “red list countries where we have particular concern about new variants”.

It comes a day after the UK death toll from coronavirus exceeded 100,000 people – though separate data published by statistics agencies places the toll at 115,000.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday Mr Johnson said he is “deeply sorry” for every life lost to coronavirus as he insisted the Government did “everything we could” to minimise deaths and suffering.

The Prime Minister offered his “deepest condolences” to those whose relatives have died of Covid-19, and pledged to ensure their loved ones are remembered.

Mr Johnson said in yesterday’s press conference: “I think on this day I should just really repeat that I am deeply sorry for every life that has been lost and of course as I was Prime Minister I take full responsibility for everything that the Government has done.”
