Police given power to ban people from three areas of Cardiff after reports of stabbing

Extra powers have been given to police to stop groups from gathering after reports of a stabbing in Cardiff.

One man has been taken to hospital after the alleged stabbing in the area of Sudcroft Street and Broad Street in Canton at 10am on Wednesday (November 25).

There was heavy police presence in the city, and several roads in the area have been cordoned off.

The Welsh Ambulance Trust said they one man was taken to the University Hospital of Wales from Virgil Street. His condition is not yet known.

A police cordon is in place at the junction of Sudcroft Street and Broad Street in the Canton/Leckwith area of Cardiff, close to Fitzalan High School.

A separate cordon is in place on Virgil Street in Grangetown, close to Ninian Park Primary School, where there is also a heavy police presence.

Officer issued a Section 60 Notice which gives officers the authority to stop and search anyone in the Canton and Grangetown areas of the city.

That was later backed up with a Section 35 dispersal order being issued for Canton, Riverside and Grangetown.

The order gives a police officer the power to exclude a person from an area for a period of up to 48 hrs by the issuing of a written notice.

A spokeswoman said: “It aims to ensure the safety of the public.”

A similar order was issued at the weekend after six teens were injured in a violent disorder incident in Cardiff city centre on Saturday.

That order gave officers the power to stop individuals and groups from congregating in the city centre for 24 hours between Sunday and Tuesday.

Seven teenagers, aged 16 and 17, have been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder in connection with the trouble and remain in police custody.
