A woman had hundreds of pounds worth of Christmas vouchers stolen when her hotel room, along with several others, was broken into.

Laura Carey, 39, and her fiancé Matthew Ford, 41, paid £100 to stay at the Citrus Hotel in Cardiff on Tuesday as they were going to Pete Tong’s Ibiza Classics at the Cardiff Motorpoint Arena.

But when the couple, from Barry , arrived back at their hotel room that evening they realised that some of their possessions had been stolen.

Laura claimed she was told by hotel staff that 11 rooms had been broken into with items such as iMacs and iPhones among the items taken.

Police said they are investigating reports of theft involving a number of rooms at the Citrus Hotel.

Laura Carey

Laura said: “I wanted to do some Christmas shopping the next day so I had all my Park Christmas Savings vouchers with me and some cash I had from my birthday.

“When we got back to my hotel, I had a shower and then I couldn’t find my vouchers and my purse was gone.

“I got dressed and went down to reception at midnight and when I told the woman that some items had been taken from my room, she said there had been a massive security breach and other rooms had been broken into too.”

Laura lost around £500 in Christmas vouchers and cash as a result of the burglary, which she says she is unable to claim back.

She criticised the way the hotel handled the situation and said she was unhappy they didn’t offer to move her and her fiancé to a different room.

“I told them they had people staying in their hotel where a crime had happened to them”, she said. “I said they need to tell other people in the hotel there had been a breach of security but they told me they didn’t want to cause a panic.

“I asked for some kind of refund but they told me this wasn’t their policy. I’ve now had to dip into my wedding fund in order to pay for Christmas.

“The big concern for me was the keys for our house and car were in the room and if they had taken my driving licence they would have had our address and my 17-year-old stepdaughter was at home.”
