NHS workers cheer and clap as another coronavirus patient recovers and leaves Welsh intensive care unit

This man was overcome with emotion when NHS workers applauded him as he left intensive care.

Only known as Carl, he was clapped and cheered by workers as on his way out of the unit at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend.

After leaving the unit, he removed his oxygen mask for a moment to thank the staff who have been looking after him as he battled coronavirus.

A hospital spokesman said: “Another patient leaves ITU at Princess of Wales Hospital. We wish him all the very best on his road to recovery from Covid-19.”

Hospitals across Wales have been sharing pictures and videos of patients who have been treated in intensive care units.

First Minister Mark Drakeford said on Friday that the number of people using critical care beds have been going down.

He added there is a stabilisation of admissions to hospital and added “we feel we have effectively suppressed the virus in the community”.

Mr Drakeford said: “Whether we’ve done it enough to lift the lockdown will depend on whether we’ve satisfied the tests set out by the Prime Minister.

“And whether we have come over the peak far enough is a different matter, Mr Drakeford said.
