Forecasters said Wales can expect a “fine and settled” weekend of weather with lots of sunshine around.

After a week of Storm Brendan which saw high winds and heavy rain, high pressure is taking charge of our weather.

Natural Resources Wales has one flood warning and one flood alert in place and parks football in Cardiff has been called off this weekend because of waterlogged pitches, but there is a much better outlook for the weekend.

Welsh forecaster Derek Brockway said: “I have good news for the weekend if you like dry weather and sunshine but watch out for Jack Frost. Crisp and sunny on Sunday.

“Ideal for a walk or fixing the garden fence after the recent gales.”

But there will be some rain first. Derek’s forecast for Friday says: “Active trough and rain moving eastwards today. Snow on the mountains.

“Drier and brighter weather following from the west. Sunshine and scattered showers this afternoon. Colder and less windy than yesterday. A widespread frost tonight.”

After weeks of unsettled weather it looks like it is going to stay around with temperatures around normal for the time of year.

The Met Office said: “After a cold start to the day on Saturday, it will be fine and dry with plenty of sunshine on offer. Staying dry through the evening and overnight with widespread frost forming, Maximum temperature 7 °C.

“Another dry and sunny day on Sunday with light winds.”

It will be colder with the Met Office long range forecast for next week forecasting “widespread frosts developing overnight at times.”

But they are also saying that towards the end of January and into February, “high pressure looks most likely to dominate across the UK, especially in the south.”

Here is the Met Office forecast for the next five days:

Friday

The south will have some showers through the afternoon but it will be drier elsewhere with sunny spells developing. A little cooler. Maximum temperature 8 °C.

It will be a largely dry evening with just the odd shower possible. Overnight it will be dry with clear spells. A colder night with a widespread frost forming. Minimum temperature -5 °C.

Saturday
