Meghan Markle has written a children’s book called The Bench about the relationship between a father and son

A children’s book called ‘The Bench’ will be published next month, written by Meghan Markle.

Publisher Random House said the story centred on the special relationship between a father and son as seen through the mother’s eyes.

In a statement, Meghan said: “The Bench started as a poem I wrote for my husband on Father’s Day, the month after Archie was born. That poem became this story. My hope is that The Bench resonates with every family, no matter the makeup, as much as it does with mine.”

Meghan and husband Prince Harry are expecting another child in the United States, where they live with their son.

The picture book, published by Random House Children’s Books, has been illustrated by award-winning artist Christian Robinson, and the audiobook is narrated by the Duchess of Sussex.

This latest venture comes at the peak of a busy year for the Sussexes. Meghan and Harry have been embroiled in tensions since announcing their decision to split from royal life a year ago, fuelled by allegations they made in a TV interview with Oprah Winfrey. The couple have said they wish to start a new, independent life, and have launched their own charitable foundation, Archewell.

They have also scored a string of commercial contracts thought to be worth in the millions for the couple, including a Netflix and Spotify podcast deals. Harry recently announced he was joining mental health and life coaching start-up BetterUp as a ‘chief impact officer.’

Meghan’s book is not her first venture into writing. As an up-and-coming actress, she penned lifestyle blog The Tig – which shut down after she began dating her prince.

Another glimpse of one of the pages of the book

The focus of the book comes after a year of trials and tribulations for the Sussexes’ growing family. Their split from royal life sent shockwaves through Buckingham Palace, and is widely believed to have underscored the growing rift between Harry and Prince William.

The couple also announced last year they had suffered a heartbreaking miscarriage. Meghan is also currently estranged from her father Thomas Markle Sr.

Their bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, in which the couple make striking allegations about the royal family, strained already fragile relations with ‘The Firm’. The Queen released a rare statement vowing to look into their claims, which included allegations a senior royal asked what colour Archie’s skin would be once he was born.

Then, just last month, and after a year of turmoil, the royals lost 99-year-old Prince Philip. Harry flew back to Britain for the first time in a year to be by his family’s side, before returning to Meghan in California. Harry is next scheduled to return to the UK in the summer for the unveiling of his late mother’s statue.

Princess Diana will be commemorated with a statue in Kensington Palace’s garden to mark what would have been her 60th birthday.
