Gareth Thomas was amongst countless LGBT+ figures honoured at this year’s British LGBT Awards.

The former Welsh rugby star was awarded the accolade for his work in raising awareness for HIV/AIDS and improving LGBT+ inclusion in sports.

Since coming out publicly in 2009, Gareth has been a vocal advocate for LGBT+ sports around the world.

Gareth came out publicly as HIV positive last year and has since gone on to become a vocal activist, pairing up with The Terrence Higgins Trust and ViiV Healthcare to create the TackleHIV campaign.

Gareth was recognised at the Queen’s Birthday Honours as well this year for his campaign work and exploits as a rugby player.

He was praised by Prince Harry after speaking openly about how his diagnosis with the virus inspired him to go on and educate others.

The annual LGBT+ awards took place virtually for the very first time this year and was hosted by TV presenter, Ryan Clark-Neal.

The awards – which take place annually – celebrate the best British and international LGBT+ talent, as well as the allies and organisations who openly support them.

Other recipients of awards included Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish, who took home the Global Impact award for their long-standing work to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS with the Elton John Aids Foundation.

“The British LGBT Awards took place this year against the backdrop of the global Covid-19 pandemic”, Sarah Garrett MBE, founder of the British LGBT Awards said.

“It wasn’t our usual ceremony but a spectacular virtual event, hosted by Rylan, ensured we could still celebrate all of those who are working hard to promote equality and advance the rights of LGBT+ people.

“Each and every one of our winners and nominees make the world a better place.”
