Football superstar Gareth Bale has made the festive wishes of struggling families come true by splashing out on 300 Christmas hampers to feed those most in need.

The sporting ace, 29, was asked if he would give away a signed shirt to help boost a campaign by the South Wales Evening Post in Swansea, called Everyone Deserves A Christmas.

But the kind-hearted Wales and Spurs player was moved to dig even deeper and has pledged to splash out £15,000 on the £50 hampers for those who would otherwise struggle to afford to tuck into a festive meal in Swansea.

The father-of-three, and former Real Madrid star, is following in the footsteps of other footballers by helping those in need, most notably England and Manchester player Marcus Rashford, who has been campaigning for the UK Government to provide free meals to children during the school holidays.

Carolyn Harris, MP for Swansea East, who is spearheading the campaign with Swansea West MS Julie James, approached Bale’s agent, Jonathan Barnett, to ask for the footballer’s support.

Mr Barnett said: “When I was approached by Carolyn I was happy to pass on her letter to Gareth and as soon as he saw it this week he immediately agreed to donate a shirt and some funds and do whatever is needed to help such a good cause.”

Mrs Harris said she was overwhelmed by his incredible show of support and said she hoped his generosity would see even more Welsh families in need benefit.

The football superstar immediately offered to help the festive appeal to support those who cannot afford a festive lunch

She said: “I can’t thank Gareth Bale enough, he will change so many lives this Christmas.

“His generosity is incredible in buying all 300 hampers.”

In her letter to Bale, she explained: “In recent months, Marcus Rashford has done an amazing job at highlighting the need to keep feeding children during the holidays and I am proud that the Welsh Labour Government are going to continue doing this.

“Children going hungry when the schools are shut is something that we have been trying to prevent in Swansea for some time, but sadly, the current situation means this year, more families than ever need help.

“This project, now in its fourth year, has grown bigger each time and this year, ‘Everyone Deserves A Christmas 2020’ is planning to deliver 300 hampers to families across Swansea who would otherwise go without.”

Bale’s major cash donation will be able to cover the cost of festive treats for families in Swansea and other parts of Wales

Rashford has inspired more than one million people to sign a petition calling for children from hard-up English families to be allowed to get free meals in school holidays as part of his ongoing campaign.

He is one in a number of footballers doing their bit to support people in need during the Covid-19 crisis including some Swansea City stars who have been contacting people to help raise their spirits.

Swansea City loanee Morgan Gibbs-White and his partner Britney De Villiers have urged fans to throw their backing behind Rashford’s free school meals campaign and throughout half term they have been offering their support to struggling families.

Posting the following message on social media, Britney said: “With everything going on right now I can’t even stomach the thought of anyone going to bed without a meal to eat.

“Morgan and I want to help where we can. If you or any of your family or friends are struggling to eat or feed your children then please drop me a direct message and we can organise a Tesco voucher to be left at Tesco in Swansea for you, or posted through your door for you to do some food shopping.

“If you’re unable to do it yourself, then I can get food dropped to your house. No-one should go hungry right now and please do not feel embarrassed at all because there’s nothing to be embarrassed about. I didn’t come from a lot so I know how tough times can be.

“Please let me know if you are in need of help right now, everything will remain confidential.”
