Expert warns holiday makers to avoid costly booking mistake after pandemic

A travel insurance expert has revealed the key steps holidaymakers need to follow when booking their trips this year.

Foreign holidays are currently banned in the UK and returning travellers have to quarantine on their arrival.

A government taskforce revealed the earliest possible date for holidaying abroad would possibly be May 17, 2021.

Holidaymakers are able to book trips abroad for later on in the year and for staycations here in the UK – but what if the coronavirus situation doesn’t allow it?

This is why travel insurance is now more important than ever, explains Anna Sant, from MoneySuperMarket.

Checking to see if you can travel is the first place to start.

“Make sure you do your research before you book your next holiday and keep any eye on the FCDO Travel Advice for the destinations you are considering,” said Anna.

“Always book with a reputable travel agent or tour operator.”

Spend extra few minutes on booking conditions

To avoid unexpected changes to your holiday plans that will leave you unprotected it is always worth checking travel insurance policies in detail, explains Anna.

She said: “It is worth spending a few extra minutes to read their booking conditions and especially about their refund or rebooking policy as a result of government or destination changes relating to covid.

“Always make sure you shop around and book your travel insurance at the same time as booking your holiday, so that you have cancellation cover in place straight away.

“Make sure also that you get the right cover for you, any medical conditions you may have as well as checking whether the policy will cover you for medical or cancellation claims due to covid.”

Does policy cover covid related claims?

When booking travel insurance for a holiday it is important you get the right one which covers the value of your holiday and any baggage or gadgets you are taking.

However this year, it’s also worth checking what your policy will cover in respect of any covid related claims.

Anna, at MoneySuperMarket, said: “Look to see if it will cover you for illness or repatriation due to covid, will it cover you for cancellation due to covid or if you are denied boarding due to covid symptoms for example?

“All polices are different, and most policies won’t cover you if there is a change in government advice due to covid or if you are travelling to an area where the FCDO advise against travel – so always check the small print.”

Travel insurance is key even if it’s a UK break

The risks of travelling are more prevalent this year due to the uncertainty surrounding the lockdown roadmap.

“Whether someone is lucky enough to be able to travel abroad or preferring to choose a staycation in the UK, you still need to be protected from the unexpected – especially in these covid times and that applies to holidays in the UK especially if you catch covid and cannot travel,” added Anna.

“That’s why remembering to arrange travel insurance as soon as you book somewhere is so important.”
