Dr Hilary stresses ‘we need a vaccine more than ever’ amid warning people can be reinfected

Dr Hilary Jones has warned that people who have had coronavirus in the past can be reinfected, following a new study.

The research carried out by the Imperial College London has found antibodies created by people who have had the virus wane overtime, risking the chance of reinfection.

The study of 350,000 people in England found a “rapid decline” in the number of antibodies stored in the immune system to fight reinfection of coronavirus.

Figures June and July showed 60 people per 1,000 people had effective coronavirus antibodies.

However, the same study in September showed results that just 44 per 1,000 had antibodies still fit enough to fight a potential reinfection.

Dr Hilary warned the study all-but defeats the idea of herd immunity.

“Natural immunity when you’re exposed to the natural disease, Covid-19, does tend to wane.

“Right now, about 4.4% of people, as we go into the second peak, have antibodies that confirm protection against the coronavirus.

“4.4%, compared to 6% earlier in the year in June and July, has waned particularly in the older age groups.

“So, being exposed to Covid-19 does not necessarily guarantee immunity going forward in the future.

“Now that’s a blow.”

Dr Hilary then went on to stress the importance of getting a vaccine to help fight the virus, saying “we need a vaccine more than ever”:

“The vaccine does tend to give a strong immune response according to the trails that have been done so far.”

Later on in the show, revisiting the segment he added: “We need a vaccine more than ever.”

Good Morning Britain returns at 6am on ITV every weekday morning.
