No-one likes to see littering – but it appears many of us are hesitant when it comes to confronting the perpetrators.

A survey run by InYourArea revealed that litterbugs are likely to get away with it even if spotted by others.

Out of ten thousand people who responded, almost half said they were too worried about someone’s potential reaction to confront them about dropping litter.

The survey was run after recent scenes at beaches, parks and public spaces around the country which saw tonnes of rubbish left strewn by many that gathered there.

Thirty per cent – about 3,000 people – said they would confront a litterbug in some circumstances, while 23 per cent said they routinely do so.

The results differed a little in some counties – anyone thoughtlessly discarding waste in the areas in red below can expect a ticking off from the locals.

Fifty per cent of respondents in Argyll and Bute, and in County Armagh, said they would confront a litterbug.

People in the counties in red or green are more likely to confront someone seen littering.
