A mysterious high-pitched noise is being heard by many living across different quarters of Swansea, and it is driving people around the bend.

People who live in areas across the city including Morriston, Cockett, Bonymaen, Penlan, Townhill, Gowerton and Waunarlwydd have all reported hearing the sound, usually late at night.

It has been described as a “high pitched humming or vibration” and has been driving people who can hear it “crazy”, each giving their own theories on what it could be in discussions on social media channels.

Swansea Council could not shed any light on the origin of the high-pitched sound, however, stating that it had not received any reports and that it was not being investigated by its teams.

It is not the first time mysterious sounds have been a cause of annoyance for people living in the city. In December last year, many were left scratching their heads about the origin of a “banging sound” which could be heard in St Thomas, Mount Pleasant and Sketty and would reverberate across the bay to Mumbles when the wind direction was right. The answer was found at a construction site near Swansea Marina, where steel piles were being driven into the bed of the River Tawe where it empties into the sea. The work is part of a £10 million rebuild of the Swansea West Pier inner wall, which is due to finish next June.

In February, 2018, WalesOnline also reported how noise coming from a generator powering a burger van in Port Tennant was creating a constant humming sound which would disturb residents throughout the day.

Siren-like noises are also usually heard coming from Clydach’s Vale Nickel Refinery every year, which tests its alarms as a matter of law in order to ensure its staff are properly trained in the case of an emergency.
