footballHampshire Constabulary has arrested people for homophobic chanting at Saturday’s (November 19) game between Southampton and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Two Southampton fans were arrested under the provisions of the Football Spectators Act for homophobic chanting, and a third man has been charged for a non-related public order offence.

The men are to appear before Southampton Magistrates Court on December 2 and are currently not allowed to attend any football matches.

Rikesh Sakaria, 28 of Bassett Avenue, Southampton and Joseph Adam Webb, 26, of Field Close, Romsey have both been charged with public order offences relating to an incident of homophobic abuse.

The third man, 38-year-old David Weir, of Belvedere Road, Bexley Heath has also been charged with an incident or abusive behaviour, and a 27-year-old man from Hove received a caution for throwing a bottle.

A spokesman for the Justin Campaign, which tackles homophobia in football said: “Southampton fans were warned before the game by police that any homophobic chanting would be taken seriously.”
