Singer Christina Aguilera has been voted the most inspirational pop act in a poll conducted by Stonewall.

Aguilera earned the accolade thanks to her gay anthem Beautiful, released in 2002.

Upon hearing of her victory, Aguilera said: “I know just how important it is to feel like you can be yourself – in your career and in your everyday life. For anyone who feels like an outsider, I want to say: Don’t let the bullies win. Be yourself – and don’t let words get you down.”

The top five results were as follows:

1. Christina Aguilera – Beautiful (33%)

2. Boyzone – Better (25%) 

3. Lady Gaga – Born This Way (17%) 

4. Gossip – Standing in the Way of Control (16%) 

5. Katy Perry – Firework (9%)
